Saint John the Baptist

John the Baptist, a relative of Jesus, preached repentance in the Judean desert and baptised Jesus in the Jordan. He is the forerunner of the Messiah and was put to death by Herod Antipas. He is remembered in all the main Christian traditions: his birth is celebrated on June 24 and his martyrdom on August 29, with further dates in the Orthodox calendar.
